Which Yoga Positions Will Help Achieve Your Goals?

Yoga positions are one of the most important factors in gaining the benefits which you are looking for from the practice of the technique, and they need to be suited to the individual practitioner. The greatest danger is that by trying to hard to achieve a certain position, you strain your body and therefore don't achieve the relaxation which is necessary for yogic practice to be effective. It is even possible to sustain injuries while practicing yoga, if you do not listen to your body and properly understand its needs.

The simplest positions which are effective for the practice of yoga are those which involve the practitioner standing up. There will be no complicated positions to achieve which involve lying or sitting on the floor in certain extreme postures which only a few people can achieve, that is largely self defeating and is part of the myth which can prevent people from investigating real yoga. Standing positions are best for anyone who does not have a medical condition relating to their legs or feet, or anything which could cause them to lose balance. From a standing position, the breath can be kept even and still, encouraging relaxation.

There is no doubt, however, that the greatest degree of relaxation can be achieved by laying on the floor. Many people with mobility problems find this surprisingly difficult, as there is extra pressure exerted upon joints and parts of the lower back. If you are using yoga to treat these conditions, you will need to start with a standing position and possibly look to switch later on. This has been done successfully by many people who have mobility issues. For those who can cope with it, the laying down position allows for more movement and flexibility, as the body is constantly being supported.

Yoga Teacher

It does have to be pointed out that there are some yoga positions which are purely for the advanced practitioners who have reached the level where they can use them comfortably. There is a tendency in today's society to want to do everything immediately, and few people have the patience to really develop a skill and keep practicing it. If you are one of the small percentage of people who is totally obsessed with yoga and the potential it has for changing your mental state, you may be one of those people who will one day be able to sit for hours in an extraordinary position.

If you are not at that level, then it is important to remember that the only purpose of a yogic position is to allow the body to attain the overall objective, whether that is a calming of the individual or improved mobility. Make sure that you choose a position simply because it can help you achieve the target you have set. If relieving stress is the primary objective, then a sitting or lying down position is likely to be more effective than standing for a long time. Good positions for mobility will depend on the individual patient.

Yoga School

There are many yoga positions to be found on the Internet for free, so there is no need for a beginner to go out and buy an expensive book on the subject. Be careful, though, if you do use the Internet as your learning platform. There are some sites which have simply rehashed information from other sites so that they can promote paid products on which they obtain a commission, and there is no guarantee that the source of the information was accurate. Make sure that you learn from proven sources with accurate information on yoga positions.
